The Ministerio de Trabajo y Asuntos Sociales has put together a travel package for pensioners who wish to visit the Canary Islands for a holiday.  For only 200 euros, the pensioners will have an all inclusive holiday within the Canary Islands (including Lanzarote).  Between the periods of April to June it is believed that 20,000 pensioners will be taking up the offer and enjoying a holiday in the Canary Islands.

The holiday offer is in an experimental stage and will only continue but only if numbers are high enough.  The offers for April, May and June are only running as it is estimated that these are the quietest months of the year.

At the moment the total population of Lanzarote is around 135,194 residents, according to a report by the Cabildo’s
Department of Statistics but with almost 50,000 tourists on Lanzarote at any given time, a figure of 184,376 has been agreed on.

The report from the Cabildo’s department of statistics also shows immigration on the island has risen by 780% since 1996. The British, with 5,240 registered residents, are the second largest group of immigrants after Colombians, and account for four per cent of Lanzarote’s ‘official’ population.

Lanzarote’s fire service has came to the spot light again when a fire broke out and destroyed a warehouse near the new IKEA store in Arrecife.  The blaze stretched the fire department to it’s limits and it is not the first time, the firemen ended up using a water tanker that is normally used to supply water to the various gardens in Lanzarote.

Lanzarote only has 20 full-time firemen which are supported by voluntary helpers from Cruz Roja in Arrecife and Tías.
