Jardin de Cactus the Cactus Garden lies between Guatiza and Mala. While driving down the main road approaching the Cactus Gardens in early April you can't help but notice the white houses with little gardens filled with cactus growing everywhere. These are grown for the Cochineal , a peculiar parasitic beetle that lives on the stems of the cacti and is harvested as it produces a red dye used for cosmetics and food processiing.
The cactus gardens are very well laid out and maintained with over 9700 plants, in the centre there is an artificial lake of fresh water which gives a pleasant sensation of contrast and freshness.
Young children would need a helping hand as there are many high steps and brick walls with no fences.
Well worth a visit, April was a bit early as the plants were just starting to flower.
