The Timanfaya National Park is the most popular tourist attraction there is in Lanzarote. Located in the south west this fire mountain nearly devistated Lanzarote by killing off everything on the Island. The area in question errupted for a total of 5 years.
Tips
When visiting the National Park you should ensure you take suitable foot wear and remember that being on top of a volcano it will be windy and sometimes cold.
Below are some pictures taken from Timanfaya, to view a larger image click on the picture.

I think the person who made the last comment needs some anger management sessions.....and to pay more attention to what he is looking at.
Fantastic place to visit, the heat of the stones and the fire is not from the sun, it is from the latent heat of the volcanic activity, if you go to the area between the toilets and the restaurant you will see them Barbecuing food over the open bore hole
About 1 mile down the road there is a Visitors centre for the Timanfaya National Park which explains the activity and monitoring. Admission is Free. Turn left as you leave the Timanfaya entrance and follow the road and Visitors Centre is on theLeft.

I went to visit the Timanfaya because i was told it is a nice place. What a disappointment, the geyser was a complete joke, a guy trowing a bucket of water into a iron pipe, then coming out as vapor. Hot sand and stones, they are only hot because of the sun!! They make some fire with some grass and that suppose to be the hit of the volcan, I cant believed you have to pay to visit this ridiculous place, the bus tour is a complete disappointment, the driver taking the photos just infront of you of the nice places, the same photos they sell to you in the souvenir shop, because you are not allowed to go down the bus and take a nice picture. Really do not visist the place, you will be disappointed and angry.

Hi,
You would have no problem with a pushchair at Timanfaya, you are taken round the park in a modern coach so there is storage. This is all included in the entrance price. There are also extremely clean toilets should you need nappy changing facilities and also a restaurant where you can buy drinks. I would highly recommend you going it is a wonderful experience.

We went to the visitor centre which isn't very interesting unless you like geology. We didn't make it up to see the geysers as we found out we needed to go on a small bus journey and didn't have time to do that. The landscape was impressive and interesting and there are lots of camels to ride on but that's about it! Overall there were few signs that explained where things were and so it was dificult to figure out where to go. We thought the visitor centre would tell us about what was offer in the rest of the park but it didn't which was disappointing.

I am just back from Lanzarote and my biggest regret is not getting to see Timanfaya. Unfortunately my back went. I really wanted to see the volcanic sunset as it is supposed to be spectacular. I will be back and my first stop will be Timanfaya.

Peter Duffell, I guess by your comment that you havent been to Timanfaya yet.
I don't want to spoil the visit for you if you haven't been there, so I'm not going to give anything away here. Keep an open mind and you will be surprised.. I was, and I am the most sceptical person on Earth :-)

Can anyone confirm that the heat for the grill is actually generated by a furnace under the ground at the front of the hotel/restaurant. Similarly the steam produced when water is poured down the shafts. Is the whole thing not a con?

Although there are numerous organised bus trips we hired a car to head out and see the Island. Of all the places we saw this was my personal favourite. From the gasp of awe when I first entered the park, to riding a camel up into the hills, the superb bus ride around the National Park - 16 Km of wonderment, to the visitors centre at the other edge of the park I don't my mouth closed once. It was a fabulous place to go. If you think Lava is just black - think again it is various colours and it produces the most amazing textures. We spent far longer here than we planned to but we just didn't want to leave.
